When a drip coffee maker brews a pot of coffee, the hot water contacts the coffee beans only once. The beans must therefore be finely ground. A disposable coffee filter prevents the fine coffee grounds from entering the serving pot. This type of coffee brewing became popular after the introduction of the Mr. Coffee brewing system.

The coffee press is a relatively new method of making a pot of coffee. Also called a French press, this unique pot brews coffee by using pressure to force the hot water through the ground coffee. Hot water and coffee are placed into the coffee press pot and allowed to brew for several minutes, depending on taste. Depressing the plunger forces the coffee grounds to the bottom of the pot, resulting in a pot of strong, aromatic coffee.

Modern pots come in all shapes, sizes, and materials, but they all do the same job. The recipe for coffee consists of only two things, so all the coffee pot has to do is intimately mix the coffee with the hot water.
